Find a list of default Windows fonts

In Windows XP

Click [Start] > [My Computer].

Warning!

Custom fonts residing in C:WINDOWSFonts will be lost if your computer is serviced or replaced, and oftentimes when information technology cleans up the networks over the summer. If you like to download and use many custom fonts (i.e., from the Internet), you will want to back up your custom font files to either a portable storage device or the 'docs' folder on your C: drive.

Download Custom Fonts from the Internet

In Windows XP

Search for “free fonts” on any search engine (e.g., Google). (Also try dafont.com.)
Click [Download] next to the font you would like.
Select [Open].
In the open file window, select “Extract All..” from the upper left corner.
Click [Next] > Click [Browse..].
In the “Select a destination” window, select “My Computer” > “Local Disk (C:)” > “WINDOWS” > “Fonts” > [OK].
Under “Files will be extracted to this directory:” it should say “C:WINDOWSFonts.”
Click [Next] > [Finish].

In Windows 7

Search for “free fonts” on any search engine (e.g., Google).
Click [Download] next to the font you would like.

Right-click the font file > Click 'Install.'

In Windows 10

Search for 'free fonts' on any search engine.
Click [Download] next to the font you would like.
Click the arrow on the downloaded file > Select 'Open.'
In the open file window, select the 'Extract' tab > Click [Extract All] > [Extract].

Windows will automatically add your downloaded custom font to the list of available fonts in Microsoft Office and other programs.

Note:

The custom font is downloaded to your C: drive, not to the network. If you create a document with a custom font and need to open it on another computer, you will need to install the custom font on the other computer as well.

Important!

Make sure you are installing the desktop fonts and not webfonts. Fonts purchased for @font-face embedding cannot be installed as a desktop font. If you purchased both, you may be looking in the wrong folder.
Zipped folders MUST be unzipped. Some Windows operating systems allow you to peek inside a zipped folder. This does not mean it is actually unzipped.

Right click on the font file and select Install.

Search for Fonts in the search box by the start menu.
Click on the Fonts (Control Panel) link to open the Fonts Manager
